Decreasing Rounds for a Baby's Circular Knitted Hat

I utilize circular needles pretty much exclusively, and all my knitting friends do, too. In that location are a few reasons for this, not the least of which is that circular needles are more readily available these days than straight needles. They're also easier to knit with than straight needles because they don't striking the table or your lap while yous're knitting (does this happen to anyone else?) and y'all won't lose one of them!

There are many things to consider when choosing circular needles, and I'm going to compare materials and brands, also as talk a little about the interchangeable sets nosotros offer.

Whether y'all prefer metal, wood, or bamboo, we've got circular needles for you.

Metal Needles

Metallic needles tend to knit "faster" than bamboo needles, because of their polish, slick surface. The yarn slides easily and speedily from one needle to another. I find metal needles can be a little besides slippery on some types of yarn, such every bit silk or bamboo, just for almost knitters metallic needles are all-purpose and the most popular.

Our favorites are addi Turbos, addi Turbo Rockets (shown below), and ChiaoGoo.

Addi Turbo Rockets and ChiaoGoo needles (shown below) accept a more than pointed tip than addi Turbos, and then if you prefer "sharper" needles, choose ane of these brands. I like a point, but not a really sharp one—I've used needles and then sharp that I actually poked my finger and drew blood. Not cool.

Chiaogoo needles

If you're working on a lace project or a design with a lot of increases or decreases, I would recommend a sharper needle, like the addi Turbo Rockets or the ChiaoGoo needles.

The Pros: Metallic Needles

  • they're virtually indestructible
  • they're smooth and fast
  • you get that satisfying clicking as you knit.

The Cons: Metal Needles

  • they might be too glace for some types of yarn
  • they tend to be cold (so might exist hard on arthritic easily)
  • you might not like that clicking noise

Wooden Needles

These are my personal favorites, and I particularly similar the bamboo ChiaoGoo needles (shown below). They're only grippy enough for me, and the cable is fab. It has no memory, so information technology straightens out on its own, with no need for steam or boiling h2o. Love this!

I also beloved the Knitter's Pride Dreamz, though—highly recommended!

Pros: Wooden Needles

  • they're "grippier" than metal needles
  • they warm up in your hands and are easier on arthritic joints
  • they're tranquility

Cons: Wooden Needles

  • they tin be slower than metal needles
  • y'all might miss the clicking noise
  • they can suspension (I've never had this happen in the course of regular knitting, merely I have stepped on my needle case and broken one)

Knitter's Pride Karbonz

Karbonz combine the best of metal and wooden needles. The shafts of the needles are made from carbon fiber an the tips are an electroplated brass. The lightweight and flexible needles warm to the touch on like wooden needles.

They're actually smooth and your stitches will motion along nicely every bit you knit. Sharpish tips piece of work on all kinds of projects.

These are really high-tech, and therefore a little more expensive. Shop-owner Kelley highly endorses Karbonz. I've but knit with them once, but I enjoyed them.

Interchangeable Needle Sets

Interchangeable sets are wonderful because you accept all of the needle sizes you need, along with cords to make them various lengths. I'm lucky to have several sets, including the five-inch ChiaoGoo Spin interchangeable set and a Knitter'due south Pride set.

We deport both of these sets, as well as a few Knitter's Pride Karbonz sets. These circular knitting needle sets are an investment, only well worth information technology for avid knitters. They also make a swell wish-list item!

ChiaoGoo Interchangeable Needle Sets

I have knit with and can recommend all 3 of these needles, but my A+ form goes to ChiaoGoo, considering of the nylon-covered, steel-cable cord. At that place's none improve in the industry (that I know of). It doesn't have memory, so there'due south no kinking or curling. Y'all don't have to straighten information technology with a steamer or humid water before beginning a projection—just twist it on and go!

Please notation that the Chiaogoo Spin large set doesn't include the wonderful steel-cable string. Information technology comes with thinner nylon cables that I don't love, honestly. They don't straighten out on their own and I actually found these cables to be particularly hard to work with. I've replaced them all with the Ruddy Flexible Nylon Cables. Bamboo needles + carmine cables = LOVE.

An important thing to know about ChiaoGoo needles is that they come with two sizes of cable joins. Sizes 2 through 8 are considered small, and take a smaller screw, and sizes 9 through 15 are considered large, and accept a larger screw. Be aware of this when you're buying private cables, because yous tin can't interchange the big and pocket-size cables.

ChiaoGoo is pronounced "chow-goo" and means "highly skillful and crafty lady" in Chinese. Love that.

Knitter'south Pride Wooden Interchangeable Sets

We comport the gorgeous Knit & Purr Interchangeable Gear up, which is packaged in a wooden box with an included material purse.

These needles are shine and beautiful! I love Knitter's Pride wooden needles for their piece of cake glide and only-pointy-enough tips. The cables are plastic, and they take some retentiveness, but you can use them straight out of the package without too much loopiness.

Each size is a dissimilar color of wood, and they're all and so pretty. Y'all'll love the shine terminate on these needles. They're almost as fast equally knitting with metal, with all of the great attributes of wood.

The Knitter's Pride joins are very smooth, and the cords piece of work with all sizes of Knitter's Pride interchangeable needles, including the Karbonz tips. This set comes with nine pairs of needle tips, sizes four through 11.

We also stock individual ChiaoGoo (5" tips and 4" tips), Knitter's Pride Dreamz, and Knitter's Pride Karbonz tips and cables (ChiaoGoo and Knitter'southward Pride).

Knitter'south Pride Karbonz Interchangeable Sets

There are several Karbonz sets available, and we offer three: the Deluxe Fix (includes size US 2.5, 3, 4, v, vi, seven, 8, ix, & 10 tips), the Starter Gear up (includes United states sizes two.five, 3, 4, 5, & 6 tips), and the Midi Ready (includes US sizes vii, 8, 9, & 10 tips).

Choose your Karbonz gear up according to which needle sizes y'all use most.

How to Measure Circular Needles

With stock-still circular needles, only mensurate from tip to tip.

With interchangeable needles, you need to measure the needle tips and the cord to get your concluding measurement. Don't include the spiral when you're measuring cords (ChiaoGoo) or needle tips (Knitter's Pride).

And then, if y'all have a 22" cable and 5" tips, you'd end up with a 32" needle. Like shooting fish in a barrel-peasy!

Here'due south a video where Kelley compares our acme selling circular needles.

At that place are many round needles and interchangeable sets available to cull from, but these are our tried-and-true top choices at Alpaca Direct. I hope this blog helps y'all make up one's mind which circular knitting needles will work best for you.

Cheers,
